At the heart of every home is a kitchen and at the heart of the Free Range Chef’s kitchen you’ll find our founder and Head Chef, Stephen Weeks.

Stephen was destined to be a chef, at age 13, while working as an apprentice in a seafood restaurant in Somerset England, Stephen realised his natural ability and skills with food. From there his love of food and his passion for being a chef grew.

At college Stephen not only achieved a National Diploma in Culinary Arts and a City and Guilds Cookery 1 and 2, but in his final year he won the regional finals for the Scotch Lamb Chef of the Year competition and was runner up in the national finals.

Once qualified, Stephen spent several years honing his skills, working his way up to senior levels in top Restaurants and Hotels around England. However, he soon caught the travel bug and his first adventure took him to the French Ski resort Les Menuires. By the end of the season he was hooked on travelling and learning about the local gastronomy. He them progressed through France, Spain and Italy, working year-round to experience the vast array of cuisine available.

After a short spell back in the UK, Stephen was given the opportunity to work as a private chef in Moliets, France, managing and cooking for families in luxury villas. Stephen soon realised he enjoyed providing a more personal service and this led him to Mallorca, working in a luxury villa, where the guests included celebrities such as the famed, Sir Richard Branson.

Stephen’s culinary journey didn’t stop there. He was bound for the legendary South Pacific and after working in Asia, where he learnt about the food and culture, he arrived in New Zealand, and began working in the kitchens of a Five Star resort in the Marlborough Sounds.

Now, having spent the last 10 years living, (including becoming a father) and working in New Zealand, Stephen puts his passion and vast knowledge and experience with food into a unique personal food service – Free Range Chef.

Over 30 years’ later, with enormous experience behind him Stephen’s passion for food has never dwindled and he would love to share his love of food with you.
